    Question 3

    3. What is iruvinaiyoppu?

The soul cannot free itself, and it cannot be freed before it is ready. When it is ripe, grace descends, and Siva Himself comes as the guru.

    Ripening

The impurities must first ripen, . One sign of ripeness is : the soul meets the fruits of good and bad deeds with the same calm, grasping at neither.

    Sweet fruits (good deeds)

    Bitter fruits (bad deeds)

Each fruit must be eaten in its turn. A sweet fruit never cancels a bitter one.

A teacher's illustration. Good deeds bear sweet fruit and bad deeds bitter, and the soul meets both; a good deed does not erase a bad one. Both kinds of fruit are bonds. The ripe soul is not moved by sweet or bitter: that is iruvinaiyoppu.

    Grace descends

When the soul is ripe, Siva's grace descends upon it: , "the descent of Sakti". Until now grace was hidden, working quietly as veiling. Now it shows itself.

The impurities ripen, and the soul grows calm before good and bad alike, a sign of that ripeness. Then grace descends, and Siva comes as the guru.

    The guru

Siva does not remain invisible. He comes to the soul in a form it can see and hear: the guru. Through the guru's teaching and initiation, , the soul's eyes are opened.
